FURNITURE

DOMESTIC OBJECTS

I started making simple furniture for my home around ten years ago. It became a continuous experimentation that is now part of my practice.

The work often happens in the encounter between specific needs in a given context, the qualities and limitations of found materials and various formal or aesthetic cues - often derived from collage methodology and various observations of details.

Building came out of the desire to have the means and ability to shape the immediate environment I live in. As such it can be seen as an extension of working with public commissions; that of creating a space to spend time with objects, moving away from the intentionality and exclusivity of the white cube, and instead entering the work environment or domestic sphere.

Therefore I am happy to do projects where interior design, craft and art overlap, either solo or in collaboration with other artists or artisans.

Browser Bookshelf, 2023.

Birch, treated with white-pigmented hard wax oil.. W:178 x H:203 x D:33 cm (legs 45 cm deep).

Made on the invitation from Pyton for the group show Virksomheten at Kunsnterforbundet in June of 2023.

I was asked to make a bookshelf to display a selection of my own book collection, which was available throughout the exhibition.

The edge ornament is made with a handheld router, a feature I developed for Becco - and made with the intent of luring your hands towards the tactile edge, oscillating between round and sharp.

The bookshelf was originally made to stand on the floor of a bright room with marble floors and overhead daylight, hence its light color and deep feet to allow it to be used from both sides. The feet can be altered to allow it to stand up against a wall as well. It can be dismantled in two to four sections for transportation.

The wood is reclaimed - from an old staircase made by Peter Opsvik in his former home at Uranienborg in Oslo.

OPS Stool, 2023.

Laminated birch with pigmented hard wax oil and lacquered wood spheres. 25,7 x 36 x 46,2 cm.

Made for the Unica auction exhibition organised by Fold Oslo, Designers Saturday and Blomqvist in August of 2023.

Color Block Stools, 2023.

Pine. Colored with pigmented linseed oil and finished with hard-wax oil.

A friend couple, Christina and Ben, asked me to make custom stools for their two children. As a child herself, Christina, her brother and cousin were ceremoniously given a stool each by their parents - their first piece of furniture. Christina wanted to pass on the tradition. She came to the studio with her daughter and we came up with the idea together.

Spacer Stool (Wavy), 2023.

Pine - burnt, brushed and waxed. 28x28x23 cm.

One stool from a series of different stools made from same sized blocks - this time with a wavy seat, rounded leg blocks - and a subtle half disk burnt relief on each side of the legs.

The wooden blocks were originally used as spacers for the concrete elements on a nearby construction site.

Hello Stool, 2021.

Plywood, painted with linseed oil paint.

In the process of designing stools for Becco the original idea was to do a family of pine board stools using basic farm stool techniques - but expanding the visual vocabulary of the board shapes This was a test of such a design.

Then the prices of pine rose dramatically due to the pandemic and pine beetle attacks in Canada, and instead we opted for oak stools using free, recycled wood from a nearby site.

Kvikk Stool, 2022.

Pine. Burnt, brushed and set with black pigmented linseed oil.

Starting with an antique table frame which could not be salvaged, this stool became an exercise in using L-shaped legs and a split seat, and was the precursor to the OPS stool.. The seat halves are routed with v-shaped stripes.

Natalie Stool, 2022.

Lacquered pine.

Corian Stool, 2019.

Termoformed and glued solid surface board. 41x 41x47 cm.

A stool or side table made for Pyton’s first group show Første Bordsetting back in 2019. Three curved feet and a flat, circular top.

Leif Stool, 2022.

Oak, oiled.

Small stool made from one board with nine cuts, a drilled hole and rounded edges.

Spacer Stool (Yellow Spread), 2023.

Pine, pigmented linseed oil and hard-wax oil. 28x28x23 cm.

Candleholder, 2020.

Painted, turned wood and found parts (bar holder from clothing rack and a porcelain ball). 25x10x10 cm.

Spacer Stool (Split Disks), 2023.

Pine, burnt, brushed and waxed. 28x28x23 cm.

One of several variations of stools combining the same sized wooden blocks in various ways, and experimenting with cuts and surface treatment.

On this one I utilized a stencil burning technique, creating a subtle relief in the wood texture (the circle halves on the seat and sides)..

The wooden blocks were originally used as spacers for the concrete elements on a nearby construction site.
