KINETIC LIGHT SCULPTURE
As part of their large-scale light design for Tullinkvartalet in Oslo in 2021, Void invited me to collaborate on a light sculpture for a gable wall - a vertical contrast to the horizontal, flowing lights built in among the cobble stones of these backyard allies.
Continuing the premise of moving lights, Bjørn Staal and I explored ways to mask and diffuse the light behind cut and folded surfaces, to create light effects within the sculpture and on the surrounding wall. The shapes are a continuation of my Channeler series, were flat, 2D surfaces become 3D volumes via simple cuts and manual manipulations on paper models.
Three lights - facing front, left and right - move separately along rails, inside a vertical, diamond-shaped chassis frame with five, frontal disks.
Each disk is unique in its cutting and folding of the circular shape, which is white on the front, and intermittently yellow or orange on the back. The cuts and folds allow for the color of the back to become visible on the front, indirectly, by diffusion.
The chassis frame offers a different kind of light effect, as the left and right side are perforated with slits - creating geometric patterns on the surrounding walls as the light passes.
The movement of the three lights, along the five-point axis, follow an idiosyncratic yet systematic symmetry and rhythm. At certain times the three lights align perfectly– events which marks time similar to that of a clock or celestial bodies.
Note: due to technical problems the lights are currently turned off.
